Campaigner Discussion Starter: The Gift

November 10, 2011

The day before our wedding, my wife handed me a gift. I unwrapped it with great curiosity to discover an inch thick journal. Its pages were filled with years of prayers she had begun writing to the Lord long before we even met. The written prayers continued during our dating relationship, anonymously interceding on behalf of her future husband. Deep into the journal, my future bride finally took a risk…and wrote my name. Soon afterwards we got engaged. The prayers continued… to the very day before our wedding.

I’ve never wept like that.

How can we as Young Life leaders help our high school friends prepare for their future spouses? Almost every high school girl thinks about the man they will one day marry. What standards should they set as they look for a boyfriend now? How do they prepare for that future husband? This 7 minute poem performed below will most surely give you chills. While somewhat complicated to understand, I think it would be a sweet discussion starter for female campaigner groups (and possibly male groups as well.)
Potential Female Campaigner Outline:

Discuss these scripture verses

1 Corinthians 13:4– “Love is patient.”
Song of Solomon 2:7– “Do not awaken love before it pleases.”
2 Corinthians 6:14– “Do not be unequally joined together with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?
Proverbs 4:23-“Guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
Proverbs 19:2“Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.”Proverbs 31:30– “Charm is deceptive and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.”

HOMEWORK: Go shopping together for prayer journals that they could begin to write in as they pray for their future husbands.
